IN LOVING TRIBUTE OF BARBARA ROBERTS LAWTF Festiva IN LOVING TRIBUTE OF BARBARA ROBERTS
LAWTF Festival Circle Member

Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival (LAWTF) would like to join the many remembrances and celebrations of life by honoring our beloved friend and member of our LAWTF family, Barbara Roberts.

LAWTF honors Barbara through the joy of a life well-lived and with deep gratitude for her laughter, her artistry, her innovative thinking and the light she shared with so many of us. Raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Barbara’s life and career was full, diverse and rich, driven by purpose and devotion – not only to the many professional roles she wore as actor, singer, director, activist– but also personally in her relationships with friends and family, especially her beloved children.

Loyal to LAWTF's mission since 2008, Barbara wore many hats over the years with our non-profit arts organization as a Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival Board of Directors member, Co-Host at the Annual Festival, and Co-Founder, moderator, facilitator and panelist of our EMPOWERMENT WEEKEND.

Barbara stood firmly and owned her space wherever she was - including every stage she stepped upon with a razor-sharp wit and boundless, passionate energy. Having served as a union activist for both Actors’ Equity Association and SAG-AFTRA, Barbara’s commitment to and love for the arts have left an indelible mark that will remain with all she so richly touched. LAWTF has experienced firsthand the respect Barbara commanded in her person and through her work knowing who she was culturally:

"I know I'm respected as a Black Woman Union Leader/Activist as well! What I'm alluding to is recognizing and celebrating Black women in this society and building a power base and not fall into the net of pitting one against another. It's a tool that is used too often with or against Black women solidarity. Just saying. That's the direction I'm on. No more conquer and divide!”

LAWTF fondly remembers Barbara N. Roberts and pays homage to her for all she selflessly contributed to our Festival community and the world of theatre!

Photos include Barbara N. Roberts with LAWTF's Empowerment Weekend and Actors' Equity Association, both of which she served.
It’s the first #MotivationalMonday of November! It’s the first #MotivationalMonday of November! Today’s #icon is a pioneering artist who redefined what it takes to be a ballerina. Misty Copeland is an author, advocate, and arguably one of the most iconic dancers in history. Raised in California, Misty discovered ballet at age 13. For most, this would be far too late to pursue ballet as a profession; it quickly became clear that Misty was, without question, a prodigy. Within months of starting classes, her savant-like ability to understand movement and choreography, along with her natural artistry, was evident. By age 15, Misty was dancing in lead roles in community productions, including The Nutcracker. At 17, she won the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Award, and by 19 – just 6 years after deciding to pursue the art – Misty was dancing with the American Ballet Theatre, one of the most elite dance companies in the world. Misty’s meteoric rise to ABT marked the start of a legendary career. Epitomizing dedication, by age 25, she was a trusted & admired soloist at ABT. As a soloist, she took on increasingly demanding and high-profile roles, including Gamzatti in La Bayadère and Odalisque in La Corsaire. During this time, Misty began to emerge as a leading advocate for diversity & inclusion in ballet, speaking candidly about feeling isolated as one of the very few Black women in such a major company. Indeed, when Misty was promoted to soloist, she was the first African-American woman to reach that level at ABT for 2 decades. Then, in 2015, Misty became the first African-American woman to be ABT’s Principal Dancer—the highest rank a ballerina can reach, and one never held by a Black woman in the 75-year history of the American Ballet Theatre. This October, Misty performed one final time at Lincoln Center, NYC, marking her retirement from the stage and the end of her 25-year, history-making career at ABT. Misty Copeland exemplifies the pursuit of purpose through the arts. She has shown a generation of dancers that ballet is a realm for everyone. With all the boundaries she has broken along the way, there is no doubt that many ballet shoes are eager to follow in her footsteps. 🩰💜 #womeninthearts

As #SpookySeason draws to a close, we want to brin As #SpookySeason draws to a close, we want to bring you the #Drama for today’s #MotivationalMonday! Shonda Rhimes is a pioneering writer, producer, and storyteller whose television empire has captivated audiences worldwide, shaped important conversations, and revolutionized the world of on-screen storytelling. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Rhimes was the youngest of six children in a family that highly valued education, creativity, and service, as emphasised by her parents. Both her mother, Vera, and her father, Ilee, had distinguished careers in education: Vera as a college professor and Ilee as an administrator who later served as CIO at the University of Southern California. Shonda was a voracious reader and an incredibly imaginative child, often telling stories aloud to her family and creating complex worlds for her toys—a skill that, combined with her emotionally intense narratives, would later become Rhimes' hallmark. She credits her critical thinking, passionate debating, and diverse outlooks to her family. Rhimes graduated from Dartmouth and USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, finishing top of her class and receiving the Gary Rosenberg Writing Fellowship. At USC, Shonda began to see herself as a world-builder, with professors noting her ability to blend emotion, structure, and ambition — qualities that would later define her TV career. That career involves being the creator, head writer, and executive producer of hit series like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” and “Bridgerton,” as well as founding her multimedia company, Shondaland, in 2005, and serving as CEO to this day. Rhimes has built entire worlds where women, especially women of color, are central to the story — complex, powerful, flawed, and human. Shonda has become synonymous with bold, diverse storytelling, and her commitment to lifting new voices has seen her win a Golden Globe, the International Emmy Founders Award, and the BAFTA Special Award, among many other honors. Shonda Rhimes is everything we at #LAWTF strive to celebrate – women who not only dream big but also put in the hard work to make those dreams come true and bring about change. #womeninthearts #womenwhowrite #womenwholeadtheway

✨ Not only is today #MotivationalMonday, but it’s also our spotlight’s birthday! ✨
We at #LAWTF would like to wish a very happy birthday to Vice President Kamala Harris and invite you to read on and celebrate her monumental career and history-making achievements.
Once upon a time in America’s story, the glass ceiling shattered. Standing in that light is Kamala Devi Harris — the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American to rise to the office of Vice President of the United States.
Born in Oakland, California, to immigrant parents from India and Jamaica, Kamala was raised to believe in the power of service, justice, and community. From the proud legacy of her HBCU, Howard University, to the sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha — the first Black sorority of the Divine Nine — Kamala has carried with her the strength of heritage, the power of unity, and an unshakable belief in justice. 🎓💚💗
After graduating from Howard and UC Hastings College of the Law, she rose through the ranks as a prosecutor, then as Attorney General of California — the first woman to hold that office — before blazing her way to the U.S. Senate and beyond.
In 2020, her election as Vice President marked a turning point in history — a moment that told countless women and girls that they also belong in the rooms where decisions are made. It ensured that every girl who dares to dream will know that the highest doors of leadership are not closed to her.
With a life and career defined by courage and conviction, the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival celebrates women like Vice President Harris, whose story is not only history-making, it is poetry in motion. On the world stage, her resilience, brilliance, and grace will continue to inspire generations to come.
As Madam Vice President said herself:
“I may be the first woman to hold this office, but I will not be the last.” ✊🏽
